Does Setsumei require an account?
No. Setsumei does not require an account. Your history, saved sentences, and settings are stored on your device.
Does Setsumei work offline?
Grammar detection, word analysis, and the sentence library work offline. Japanese-to-English translation also runs on device after iOS downloads Apple’s Japanese and English language packs. The initial language-pack download requires an internet connection.
How do I analyze a sentence?
Type or paste Japanese into the editor, choose one of the included examples, or search the sentence library. Select Explain this sentence to create a lesson.
What should I do if an explanation is wrong?
Grammar recognition and explanations can make mistakes. Use the report action on that grammar lesson to create an email containing the relevant sentence and grammar point. Nothing is sent until you review and send the email yourself.
Why is translation unavailable?
Make sure the Japanese and English language packs have been downloaded when iOS prompts you. Translation availability also depends on your iOS version and device support. Try the translation again after the downloads complete.
How do I delete my data?
Open Settings in Setsumei and choose Clear sentence history. Removing the app also removes its local data, subject to the behavior of device backups managed by Apple.
Which devices are supported?
Setsumei requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later and is designed for both iPhone and iPad.
